I was shadowing a Shoprite (grocery store) dietitian recently, and she asked me to get low sodium black beans for a black bean brownie recipe she was teaching. Normally, I would grab whatever can of black beans said “low sodium” on it, but there were a few different brands so i decided to compare. I grabbed Goya “Low Sodium” black beans and another brand (I think it was Rienzi) of black beans. I was shocked to find that Goya’s “Low Sodium” black beans actually had 100mg more of sodium than the other brand! It’s a shame that claims like that can so easily trick someone who’s not reading the fine print or doesn’t know to do so. Tip of the day: read food labels, and learn what to look for on them!
